Rules and Regulations:
The Armbrust Publishing Composition Competition is a unique opportunity for composers to have their work performed by the Twisp Chamber Orchestra.
The competition is divided into 3 tiers over 2 rounds plus initial acceptance to competition by Jury.
Tiers:
Regional: Composers who provide proof of primary residence in Eastern Washington State, defined as living between the eastern side of the Pacific Crest and the border with Idaho and inside Washington State, will compete against each other for the $200 Regional Grand Prize plus performance of their work at the Twisp Chamber Orchestra Music Festival in mid September of 2022, a live video and audio recording of their piece from the festival, and the option of having their winning piece signed to Armbrust Publishing.
National: Composers who provide proof of being a United States Citizen will compete against each other for the $300 National Grand Prize plus performance of their work at the Twisp Chamber Orchestra Music Festival in mid September of 2022, a live video and audio recording of their piece from the festival, and the option of having their winning piece signed to Armbrust Publishing.
International: This tier is open to anyone from anywhere. Composers who enter this tier of the competition will compete against each other for the $500 International Grand Prize plus performance of their work at the Twisp Chamber Orchestra Music Festival in mid September of 2022, a live video and audio recording of their piece from the festival, and the option of having their winning piece signed to Armbrust Publishing.
Rounds:
Jury: In an effort to keep APCC of a certain quality all entries will be subject to an initial review. Accepted entries will proceed to Round 1. Denied entries will be refunded all but $5 as a processing fee and will receive a small critique of the entry and a brief objective explanation of why the entry was denied.
Round 1: After acceptance by Jury, Round 1 will be by popular vote. Votes will be collected by posting to the APCC Facebook Page links to 5-10 second videos of your voters with their face uncorrupted or concealed stating, “My name is____ and this is my vote for____ by ____”. Votes that do not follow these guidelines and that are not in the spirit of honestly representing one vote per individual will not be counted. 3 entries from each Tier will be selected to advance to Round 2 based on highest amount of counted votes per participant.
Round 2: The Jury will select one winner from each Tier and respectively award the above.
Rules:
Composers entering the Regional and National tiers must provide a photo of their State ID or Passport.
Composers who apply to these tiers without the above info will automatically be disqualified from the competition without refund.
Composers who apply to these tiers and do not live in their respective Tier zones will automatically be disqualified from the competition without refund.
Composers who fraudulently represent where they live to be eligible for entry in Tier 1 or Tier 2 of the competition will automatically disqualified from the competition without refund upon discovery of the fraudulent activity.
Composers entering any tier of the competition must provide Photo ID, and sign the contract as an affidavit that they are the person who created the work being entered.
Each entry fee will represent the application of one composition.
Composers are welcome to enter as many compositions as they choose as long as a separate entry fee has been purchased for each composition.
A composition may only be entered in one Tier.
Composers who are eligible are welcome to enter separate compositions in separate Tiers.
A multi-movement composition will be considered one entry unless otherwise remarked by the composer or if it does not fit the performance time constraints.
Composition requirements:
Compositions entered must never have been performed publicly before.
Compositions must have been written in the last 3 years.
Compositions must be 7-18 minutes in length.
Compositions must be scored for between 3 and 15 players. No more than 6 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, 1 bass, 1 flute, 1 clarinet, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, 1 un-pitched percussionist with common battery, 1 pitched percussionist (marimba, vibraphone, or Timpani), and 1 piano. All irregular instruments and unmentioned instruments are not guaranteed to have that part performed.
Compositions must be free of all non-acoustic sounds: no electronic noises, electric instruments, electric processing or backing tracks.
Permissions:
By entering a composition to the APCC the composer is releasing permission for their composition to be used by Armbrust Publishing and its affiliates for the purposes of advertising the APCC and permission to perform and record their composition during rehearsals and performances of the Twisp Chamber Orchestra Festival to be held in mid September 2022.
All use of copyrighted material by an entry must have documented permission from the author or publisher of the original work to be considered. Entries that commit copyright infringement will be denied without refund.
Cancellations, Withdrawn Entrees and Refunds:
In the event that unforeseen circumstances, such as COVID-19 impact, or fiscal failure, other emergencies or mishaps make the grand prize offerings unfeasible or unmanageable, all entrees will receive a full refund within 2 weeks of the announcement of the cancellation of the APCC and Armbrust Publishing will relinquish any permissions granted as part of the APCC.
If an entry is withdrawn by the composer for any reason, the withdrawal must be made in writing and submitted by email to Armbrust Publishing. Withdrawn entries will not receive a refund. Armbrust Publishing will relinquish all permissions for withdrawn entrees.
Voting:
Composers may advertise their entries as they see fit to garner voting constituents.
A vote will be counted for an entry when a 5-10 second video is uploaded or linked to the Armbrust Publishing Facebook Page of your voters with their face uncorrupted or concealed stating, “My name is____ and this is my vote for____ by ____”. Any individual is allowed one vote in each Tier of the APCC.
Votes that do not follow these guidelines and that are not in the spirit of honestly representing one vote per individual per tier will not be counted.
Voting will open on July 15, 2022.
Votes will be counted on August 1, 2022.
The 9 winners of Round 1 will be announced on August 2, 2022.
Round 2:
The Jury will announce the APCC winners on September 1, 2022.
Awards:
The winners of Round 1 will receive a $50 gift certificate to Armbrust Publishing.
The winners selected by the Jury of their respective tiers will receive the Grand Prizes listed above.
Deadlines:
All entrees must be paid in full and sheet music submitted according to APCC parameters by June 30, 2022.
Score, Video, and Audio Parameters:
Scores must be submitted in an easily legible PDF format, and be digitally notated through a program like Finale or Sibelius.
Hand written scores will be denied without refund.
Video files must have an external link to an easily viewable online platform without the need for permission for viewing, or be submitted with no less than 720 resolution.
Audio files must have an external link to an easily viewable online platform without the need for permission for viewing, or be submitted as an MP3 or M4A.
Digital and Midi renditions are welcome, but live recordings are preferred.
Public Profile of the APCC:
All progress and announcements relevant to the APCC will be published to the Facebook page @ArmbrustPublishing.
It is the responsibility of the entrant to keep apprised of posts on @ArmbrustPublishing with regard updates to the APCC.
In the spirit of the APCC:
The the spirit of the APCC is to create a forum to discover and help composers build their public and professional profiles. There is no intent on the part of Armbrust Publishing or its affiliates to misinform, misrepresent, give unfair advantage to, or in any other way host a dishonest competition. As such, Armbrust Publishing expects all parties involved with the APCC to participate in good faith with this spirit.
In the event an entrant displays publicly verifiable malicious behavior that does not represent the spirit of the APCC and that may unfairly impact the results of the APCC, their entry or entries will be denied without refund.
Armbrust Publishing and its affiliates are not liable for any mishaps that negatively effect the public or professional profile of an entrant due to hosting the APCC.
Armbrust Publishing is responsible to openly hold a fair competition in good faith, all trespasses of this spirit by Armbrust Publishing shall be understood by the grieved as accidental and Armbrust Publishing and affiliates will not be held legally actionable for these grievances.
